The project tries to use materiality as a way of revitalizing the old train station in Shanghai, by respecting the existing materials of the abandoned building. New materials are introduced and inserted into the building to create thresholds and spaces. A series of contrasts of old and new, solid and light, fixed and loose create an atmosphere of blurriness. Without having an enclosed envelope, blurred seams aim to establish an open plan with continuous undefined and flexible spaces. Tourists visiting the newly transformed train station will experience a series of thresholds and different materials, which will thus celebrate the hybridization experience throughout their travel.
