instructor: christopher lee & ian lowrie
The project envisions a new form of living together and tries to expand the meaning of community in tall buildings, by creating a series of communal spaces. Stacked voids of double or triple height become communal terraces that connect residences to the exterior. These voids will work as in-between rooms with various shared programs such as co-working spaces, gardens, and playgrounds. Also, communal voids are connected to another layer of mid-door rooms with transparent walls, which allows each unit to display its dwelling to its neighbors. By visually opening up the houses to communal areas, diverse lifestyles of residents can merge with the outside, which will promote community and communication among neighbors. All in all, these spaces can have articulated programs in smaller scales, in contrast to the surrounding undefined open spaces in the neighborhood.
