This project envisions revitalizing a currently frozen and embalmed city, Pingyao in China, by introducing a new typology of housing - a hybrid of hotel and residence. This hybrid will establish an interaction between local residents and tourists, who are now mutually exclusive. Pingyao’s conservation strategy has focused only on the authenticity of old buildings, primarily trying to restore them to their original conditions. Although this preservation of materiality has made Pingyao a famous tourist destination accompanying its UNESCO designation, it has transformed the city into a museum without allowing any changes yet excluding locals. In this context, this project suggests a hybrid of hotel and housing; two different user groups can embrace each other, and two lifestyles of locals and tourists can be connected. It introduces several prototypes outside the ancient city wall so the city can potentially expand beyond the current boundary in a more interactive and inclusive way.
